my ribbon is better than your sticker

support_our_pants.gif"my kid fought in iraq
so yours could party in college"

when i saw this bumper sticker my heart boiled with anger. perhaps it's the liberal in me, but what would have been wrong with ending that sentence after the first phrase?

"my kid fought in iraq" -- that phrase makes me feel for you. i can imagine what a difficult time your family endured. i can even understand your pride. that phrase alone is a statement that promotes awareness of just how many people around us are touched by this war.

but the second phrase... what is its purpose? it serves solely to divide us. i am better than you -- that's what that phrase says to me. i can't even begin to comprehend why that person bought this sticker, except to intentionally piss people off. this is a person i don't want to know. (forget that the sticker was adhered to the bumper of a very large SUV.)

thank god for jon stewart. his humor is the only thing that keeps me sane on days like this. i laughed out loud during his recent response to bill o'reilly's contention that 'comedy central' was actually 'secular central' -- o'reilly was pissed, i guess, about the show's facetious attack on christmas and implied that there was no moral code at the network. stewart said, "that's right, bill... i hate christmas, and i will not rest until families everywhere gather together on december 25th at 'osama's homo-'bortion pot and commie jizzporium'"

where can i get a sticker that says "your kid fought in iraq and i stayed home, sat on the couch, and laughed with jon stewart as he poked fun at your moral superiority"?

"Support Our Pants"--that's funny. I don't remember where I found out about this site but the Support Our Ribbons site has some funny stuff too:

My sticker would have to say:

"I protested so your kid wouldn't have to go to Iraq. (Too bad I'm a crazy peacenik and no-one listens to me!) Sorry about your son."

Or try "My brother fought in Afghanistan--and so did his boyfriend. What more do they have to do before we recognize their rights?"

Hey, what does us being in Iraq have to do with someone's ability to party at college. If we weren't in Iraq, people would still be partying in college. The two don't have anything in common. Iraq has nothing to do with upholding truth, justice, and the American Way kinda "I fought so you could be free". We weren't, in any way, threatened by Iraq. Our lifestyle (save oil) was not in any way endangered by Iraq. It's absurd, and I'd find it completely humorous if I wasn't busy planning my childrens' future parties at college for them. Jesus, that's , oh, so fucking lame.

We would not be suffering under the boot of Saddam Hussain if their child hadn't gone. That's just a stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid sticker.

I wonder if someone's created a good flyer to slip under the windshields of cars such as that one. (Presuming they're parked.)

Something that honestly critiques current war policies (and all the economic / military assumptions that feed it) without being immediately offputting to the recipient.

What if the flyer started, "Why I support your kid, but not the war..."?

p.s. early on in the series of Saturday protests at Brightleaf, my friends Charles and Marghie were very good about engaging in conversation with people who yelled at us. In one case, a military vet drove *the wrong way* down Gregson and over a curb just to come yell at us. Charles and Marghie persisted in asking him questions and stating their beliefs. I don't think he was convinced much.

In another case, someone yelled out the window, "you're all communists," or something like that. Charles yelled, "come back and talk to us!" and he did.

"Our lifestyle (save oil) was not in any way endangered by Iraq."

Moreover, Saddam sold us the oil for cheaper than the Coalition does.
