 if the shoe fits...

i have an urge to buy some shoes.

i also have an urge to try shopping at zappos. i've never bought shoes online before, but with free shipping and free returns i guess i have little to lose.

i've narrowed down my choices to 7 pairs, and i wanted to post the photos next to each other so i can get a better idea of what all i'm considering.

also, i would love your input.

softspots: viviana
$43.90

clearly not in season for much longer, but totally cute nonetheless.

sofft: sienna
$87.95

not really my style, but then again... they're not my style so they'd be something entirely new. besides, they look utterly comfortable. they'd be everyday shoes through the fall and winter.

softspots: brenda
$40.90

i like the toe-thing. the viviana (above) is a similar shoe... i'm not sure which i like better.

naturalizer: uptight
$72.95

totally impractical... but WOW! (why on earth are these shoes called "uptight"?!?)

bass: sharon
$39.95

once again, not really seasonal, but i don't have any sandals this color/style.

clarks: hall
$72.95

i've always wanted a pair of clarks (they're supposed to be really good shoes, right?), but i've never found a cute pair in a wide width. here they are. i like the fancy detailing on top, though the toe is not as pointy as i generally like. (in fact, in the customer comments several people say that the shoes are clunkier than the photo would suggest.)

ros hommerson: whisper
$125

though ridiculously expensive, i think i am definitely going to try these. ideally i'd prefer if these were a knee-high boot (like the uptight ones above) but they may be ok.

They are all cool....but so different. Are you looking to buy only one pair? I envy people that can wear boots, the "Uptights" are gorgeous. Those sandals make me paranoid that my fat-ass big toe wouldn't fit through the strap.

i could probably talk myself into getting 2 pairs. maybe 3. especially knowing that i can freely return them if they don't work.

i don't think i'm necessarily the type of person who "can wear boots", but i'm going to give it a shot! what the hell!

the other day someone told me my legs looked like marlene dietrich's. i think that was a compliment. it has caused me to think i have decent enough legs for boots, anyway.

this is probably just me, but i have bad style associations with the bass sandals, which is what my mom and i both wore in the early '80's.

it's hard to advise without looking at your entire shoe wardrobe, because only then would it be obvious what holes you might need to fill. the black boots i would say are a must try.

the red snakeskin boots are a must try; i think it would be great for you to have some footwear with a detailed texture and some extra flair-- what i call "novelty shoes". however, the calves on those boots look narrow. i tried on those black lace up boots today and ran into the calf problem *again*, same as with my other boots. so i'm now acutely conscious of it. still, if they are leather, it's possible they could be stretched.

my sense is that you have plenty of sandals, so maybe one of the two closed-toe shoes would be a better addition to the shoe wardrobe, especially if you don't have any that color. i like them both. my personal preference would be the sofft shoes, but i'd have to see both pairs on you to say which is better for *you*.

god, i love shoes.

The black boots are hot. I'd go for them, definitely. The sofft shoes look really funky but also comfortable. I'd seriously think about both those pairs. And I second what Lisa said about the Bass sandals. I think think my mom and me both had that pair too!

I am not much of a shoe critic, but I like most of those, the two shoe-shoe pairs (not boot, not sandal) most of all. I had a pair of Bass sandals just like those once.

As for Zappo's, my daughter ordered a pair of shoes on there at 11pm with standard shipping, and they arrived at our door by 3pm the following day. Can't really beat that, I'd say. I don't know that they always do that, but they sent an email saying they were upgrading our shipping at no cost to us (it was actually free). I plan to buy more shoes from them--they have great sales.

oh goodness. look how out of the loop i am... generations of women have been tormented by bass sandals! i'll nix that pair based solely on that information. thanks for the tip.

the red boots, i might add, also come in other colors. the greenish/black color is appealing to me, too. as is the black, of course. (click on the photo to see the variety...)

Great choices, but I would skip on Sienna, Brenda and Uptight. Brenda seems too plain, and very similar to Viviana, but Viviana is just a little more unique. Uptight could be hard to find a good outfit to wear them with, but if you have one in mind, then ignore me. :) Sienna is cute, but they look like the kind of shoes that Clinton and Stacey on What Not to Wear would throw away - they'd say the heal is chunky, the toe is flat, and they're not adding any pizazz. Viviana and Hall are my favs. By the way, my boyfriend's sister bought her wedding shoes at Zappos and was very happy with them.

Mary Clare wore those exact Bass sandals.

Zappos is so addictive, the way you can do all different searches...agh! I just bought my first pair of Fluevogs through Zappos last week and they should be in today. But I'm already thinking about returning them b/c they were so expensive!! But they'd last a long time, right?!

I'd say stay away from the sandals now and go for something more seasonal. I like the Clarks.

OK, bass sandals are a big no. funny that bass has bad memories for so many of us. I used to have some almost like that, but I was probably 13 years old. that brass thing on the leather is the worst part. as for the other 2 open toed ones, I like viviana better than brenda, but coming from a girl who had all her black slides critqued, I'd ask if you really need another open toed brown sandal, epecially in october. now you know I'm not a boot girl, but I like the black ones better than the red and black ones. those are very tall and it's hard to picture them with any outfit. they're cool and impractical like you said, but maybe you should think about that. the siennas look like al the danskos that I like and you shun. :-) in fact, they look a lot like the cloggy ones, actually and even I shun those. so that leaves me to the clarks, which are my favorite. if you don't get them, I might! :-D I might anyway. in black. I love zappo's multi-view function. you can check important things, like what a cool footprint these shoes would make. heeheheheeh.

I have ...erm... shapely calves and have "issues" with boots not being wide enough around the calf. If you do get the black boots, let me know how high up on the calf they come and whether they're wide, won't you? (Even the stretch ones are often not wide enough...sigh).

PS I like the clarks too!
